- Description
- Danse Mécanique was written in 2014 for the Bateira Trio, consisting of flute (doubling piccolo), viola and double-bass. The duration is 4.5 minutes.
The title suggests a kind of mechanical dance, mainly because the music tends to be repetitive, with some minimalist tendencies.
The piece opens with the extreme registers of piccolo and double bass, after which the main theme is stated. This is in eleven beats to the bar, divided into 4 + 4 + 3 beats. Quasi-repetitive rhythms are stated; a different rhythm for each instrument. A more melodic idea is later stated by the flute and after these are developed, a new, slightly faster idea is introduced in the viola. After a variant of the opening section, the faster theme is again developed and this brings the piece to an exciting conclusion.
